Lewes Rowing Club

Although a few elite sporting clubs existed earlier, (Henley 1839) the movement to start sporting clubs really took off at the beginning of the 1870's. Lewes was at the fore front and founded Lewes Rowing Club in 1874. To put this in context  the first Calcutta Cup match was not until 1879 and Premier League football clubs did not start until the 1880s.
